Materials: Terracotta

Students

Material choice is rarely just aesthetic. Metal corroding climates or wood destroying organisms are just some of the considerations one might need to take into account when deciding on an appropriate building material. Terracotta Cladding can respond to various climatic conditions and also adds an opportunity for a range of colourful finishes. Terrart make these panels in various colours shapes and systems, from rain screen system, to louvre and baguette. The material samples and colours make a great selection for ones rendering materials library.
Examples of the material in practice are Potsdamer Platz by Renzo Piano, and the Brandhorst Museum in Munich by Sauerbruch & Hutton

I’m starting a project studying terracotta developments in the UK compared with the USA, culminating in 8 weeks travelling across the States. Any thoughts and comments on the use of the material?
