Architecture Photo of the day #16 – Winding

Media

Everyday, if I encounter stairs and lifts, I try to take the stairs. I do this for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because it’s good for me, and secondly because I like stairs! The humble stairs are an object that expresses its beauty through its ability to do its job. Its form comes from its function, its beauty from its form. The lift is certainly great for ascending 70 storeys quickly, but for shorter journeys, you can’t beat a great set of stairs!

This photo really nicely captures exactly what I’m referring to. The stairs are nothing more than they need to be. Aside from a few decorative enhancements, these stairs are purely there performing their jobs. The fact that each and every flight has been crafted to allow for multiple users, accounted for strides height and distance and of course made sure there is always adequate height below to pass is at the same time both expected and extraordinary. Stairs are astounding!
