Architectural Photography Series #14 – Shaun Donnelly
Today we are delighted to present the works of aspiring amateur photographer Shaun Donnelly. Living and studying out of Manchester, North West England, Shaun has developed a love for an industrial city in transition. Below he has shared with us some photographs he took on a recent exploratory journey through the old Mount Hospital.
Urban Exploration – The Mount Hospital
The Mount was a small hospital in the Bishopstoke area of Eastleigh, close to Southampton Airport. A collection of old small buildings, it is dominated by the imposing Victorian mansion on site, complete with tower, which was built in 1893. Conversion to a hospital began in 1927 by Hampshire County Council after purchasing it.
Today it stands in dereliction.
While the site has been damaged badly by vandals, broken windows, smashed doors, et al, there is still some real beauty to be seen in this former place of healing.

The badly damaged main exterior of one building using an old sign as a makeshift cover.

The formidable tower of the mansion, seen here from a lower roof.

Looking down the various floors in the mansion. Bits of the ceiling and walls now resting on the thick carpet crunch underneath your feet with every step.

A secret staircase leading to the top of the tower was revealed behind a panel. The view from the top shows just how cramped and narrow the cavity is.

The hospital’s long forgotten service road.
“Sites like The Mount Hospital can be found all over the world, in places long left behind. Hopefully these photographs can give some insight into the beauty that can be found in dereliction”, Shaun Donnelly.
