Architectural Photography Series #12 – Duncan Lawson

Over the last couple of months we have been privileged to present work from some of the UK’s top architectural photographers – and this week is no exception. Direct from success at the Lighting Design Awards 2011 we are delighted to present the stunning photography of Duncan Lawson. An award winning photographer with a keen eye and understanding of how to bring the best out of a structure on camera – an excellent way to start the week!

Duncan Lawson is an East Sussex based architectural, interiors and commercial photographer with commissions here in the UK as well as beyond.

Leaving college some 20 years ago, Duncan found work in London working in advertising photography. After many years being based primarily in the city he relocated down to the coast to further pursue his career as a photographer. Throughout his career Duncan has maintained a strong love of architecture, and this passion is clearly obvious in his photos. Full of life, capturing not just the structures themselves but also the atmosphere and mood they create in finely balanced photography, Duncan says that this love of architecture has never been too far away.

“Whilst my areas of discipline and subject matter are wide and varied, I have a particular passion for architectural and structural photography and was drawn to it from an early stage in my career. Whenever I can, I like to isolate the subject down to its basic elements, keeping anything extraneous or distracting out of the picture. Less is very often more I find and results in a far stronger composition and impact.”

Earlier this month (March 2011) Duncan won the inaugural Lighting Design Photography Award 2011, part of the Lighting Design Awards 2011. Triumphing with the ‘Steps at La Défense Paris’ and ‘Golden Jubilee Bridge’ London’ photographs (both pictured below) against some very tough and prominent opposition, the future looks bright for Duncan!

His clients range from multi-national companies down to one-man architectural practices and business owners, offering Duncan a varied and eclectic project base, clearly visible from the photos he has kindly shared with us below.

He also makes some of his images available in limited edition, large fine art prints through a London gallery which sell predominately to corporate clients.

Some simply stunning images here, they capture the essence of the structure without any gimmicks. Well done.
