Strancally Castle, Swimming Pool – Munkenbeck and Partners Architects

Architecture

Architects Munkenbeck and Partners were commissioned to add this underground pool to Strancally Castle in Ireland. The brief called for a modern addition that would not detract from the historic beauty of the building. The swimming pool does well to visually separate itself from the rear view of the house, whilst at the same time, the clever glass roof pulls light into the space.

The clean lines of the structure create an open and modern feel, whilst the strong use of natural stone links the swimming pool to the castle above.

“The client wanted a contemporary extension to their castle in County Waterford, Ireland. The new subterranean building includes 25 metre long indoor/outdoor pool with a rising floor that becomes an outdoor terrace when the pool is not in use. The building also provides a bar and poolside lounge, jacuzzi, hamam, gymnasium and professional treatment room”, Munkenbeck and Partners
