Recycled Road Sign Fence

Architecture

There is something lovely about these fences. I’m not sure if its the fact they’re made from recycled road signs or that they are the product of young people who take part in an outreach and educational program. Actually, I guess its both.

It’s great to see something that within its normal remit of use has come to the end of its life find a new home. Its equally inspiring to know that this fence, unique in its look and resourceful in its use of materials was created by young people in Greensboro, Alabama (USA) working towards their GED (US and Canadian high school academic certificate). The kids come from low incomes backgrounds, and the program gives them a real chance to get a foot up in life. They learn real world skills and trades that hopefully, will lead them to a better and brighter future.

Not one to get caught up in political matters (especially when I understand very little of the situation as a whole), this one project undertaken by the Youthbuild program makes me think that the work they do is positive. Sadly, the US congress doesn’t agree, and are cutting their funding. You can sign the petition to help save this worthwhile cause here.
