Quill – Spparc design gets go ahead

Architecture

The Shard has been going up very quickly over the skyline of London, and as thought by many observers at the commencement of its construction, its arrival has begun a mini construction boom in the local area.

Southwark council have given the go ahead to Spparc Architects and King’s College London for the building of The Quill, a 21 and 31 storey 2 tower ‘student hub’ development. The development will comprise of 470 rooms, a student bar, library, gym and café. The development, being built within the shadow of the 310m tall The Shard, will top out at 109m.

The design has come under scrutiny from both CABE and English Heritage in relation to the effect it may have on current views of Tower of London. Despite these objections, Southwark council have approved the application. The design inspiration for the Quill is the areas literary history.

Whilst it certainly will be a striking addition to the London Skyline, I’m not sold on the Quill affect at its peak, looks for a rather uncomfortable crown of thorns, one which, under the gaze of The Shard, it may not carry so well.

No date has yet been set for commencement on site.
