Online Historical Maps of UK
Cartography is a delicate art, and a well drawn map is a beautiful thing. Over at Vision of Britain they have created an interactive map that allows for exploration of the British Isles with maps from the 19th and 20th Centurys, allow visitors to zoom right into county level.
Along with the maps of the 19 and 20th Centuries, they have a superb Land Utilisation map that illustrates brilliantly the spread of urban development across the UK – looking at the maps is like looking at art work, the balance of the different colours makes for a lovely palette.
To accompany the historical maps they also have in-depth statistics covering a wide range of areas, from population to politics, housing to religion.
Another great gem on the site is the big (said to be the largest online) collection of historical travel diaries from authors who visited towns and cities across the UK over the last 800 years, from Karl Moritz to Samuel Johnson, and plenty in-between.
Visit [Vision of Britain] to explore the maps!
