I Smell Trouble: BIG Waste to Energy Ski Slope
Bjarke Ingels Group’s winning design for a waste to energy plant in Copenhagen, is also a recreation centre and ski slope. Adding this level of functionality to the design is a great step towards a form of sustainability that is not a burden, but profits all aspects of modern life. The design includes an alteration to the smoke stacks to allow it to blow a smoke ring when 1 ton of fossil CO2 is released, as a physical reminder to us of the effects of consumption.
Having visited the Valdemingomez recycling plant outside Madrid, I am well aware of the unbearable stench that comes from the surrounding areas of the waste facilities. Hopefully they have addressed the health implications of recreation so close to an area with a probable high level of gaseous emissions and how to tackle the the awful smells associated with waste facilities, otherwise it will be less ski plugs and more nose plugs.
