Bicycle transit Center, Washington – KGP Design Studio
Bike riding in major urban centres is big business, and catering for all the tens of thousands of daily commuters has become an important part of city planning. In Paris, they have the Velib hire system, here in London we have the sponsored Barlcays Bike Scheme (often affectionately termed the Boris Bike Scheme after the Mayor Boris Johnson).
In Washington they have their own system, the Capital Bike Share, and to go with it they have a superb storage bay, called the Bicycle Transit Center, by KGP Design Studio. Sitting outside Union Station, the Bicycle Transit Center also provides spaces for non hired bike securing as well as a retail space.
There are areas of London that could do with dedicated storage centre like this one, security is still the major concern for most cyclists.
The design itself takes many cues from the humble bicycle wheel, mimicking its spoke support system to hold up the tubular steel that spans the building. Clad in glass panels, the building is designed to exhibit its design and strength, a marriage of engineering and architecture. Beautiful.
