Bicycle Sharing Concept, Copenhagen, LOTS Design

The City of Copenhagen has just finished voting on its international competition to find a new bike sharing system for the city, with the first place going to the OPENbike system from Swedish studio LOTS Design, in partnership with Koucky & Partners and Green Idea Factory.

The bike has been designed to be robust, able to withstand heavy use whilst also being as adaptable and user friendly as possible. To this end, their is a ‘family’ of OPENbike’s, suitable not only for leisure or commute riding but also, through the use of an interchangeable front, as a delivery bike.

The bikes incorporate a smart RFID card system for hiring out, as well as a GPS system to provide constantly up to date location data for each bike. The bikes also include a number of other ‘smart’ features, including accelerometers to measure movement and shock and ‘hub generators’ to provide power for the lights and other on-board electronics.
