B House, London – Octopi Architects
The new build home Octopi Architects is defined by the dialogue that existed between the surrounding area and the previous property. This very old relationship that is played out at every surrounding property was an important defining restraint, and the Architects used it to help develop the architectural language they created for the new home.
The success of the home lies in the strong interconnectedness that springs from the central light well that runs through the property. This performs the very useful role of channelling light into other areas of the site, but it alo creates a space that is shared by multiple floors, thereby creating a relationship that wouldn’t otherwise exist.
Located on the site of a former stately home, the historic and existing boundary walls still dictate the layout of the houses in this area of London. Working with the multiple boundary changes, the house set up a dialogue between the various levels and volumes throughout the 5000sqft of accommodation.
Set over three levels, the basement featured a gym, pool and guest accommodation overlooking a large sunken courtyard. The ground floor provided principle living areas, with the master and children’s bedrooms on the upper floor, Octopi Architects
