IJburg House – Marc Koehler Architects
Looking like a cross between a climbing wall, a digital art landscape and a futuristic family home, the IJburg House by Dutch architect Marc Koehler is a very striking creation indeed. Sitting on an artificial island on the IJ River just outside Amsterdam, the IJburg House is a building that relies on exterior treatment rather than complex massing to create a dynamic appearance that wouldn’t look out of place in the 8-bit games of my childhood.
The ingenuity of the architect shines through when you consider the house is built on a limited plot size yet still incorporates generous open planned living as well as a green walled vertical garden, maximising the usable internal space and allowing for a home that really does strike a great balance between impressive digital shapes and soft natural elements. The digitised exterior of the facade also serves to allow for the growing of the plants that climb the building
